The Basics
Where did you grow up? I’ll tell you if you don’t hold it against me…but I was born and raised in Southern California. Mostly calling Huntington Beach home.
Tell us about your family: Jennifer and I have been married for 26 years at the time I am writing this (2025). We have 5 kids, most of whom are grown but we have one left at home. I’m not trying to rush him out, but I’m looking forward to the day when I get my wife all to myself!
When did you start working at Trinity? I started working at Trinity in the Summer of 2020, right in the middle of Covid. In fact, the Sunday I preached as a candidate here at Trinity was Trinity’s first Sunday back meeting since the “pause” that was supposed to be two weeks to slow the spread. Two weeks turned into two years…it was a strange time in which to start pastoring a church.
Personal Life & Interests
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? If I’m doing something on my own, golf. If I’m spending the day with Jennifer, probably a hike or doing something in the flower garden.
What are some of your favorite bands? Great question. I like a lot of different kinds of music. Shane and Shane, David Crowder Band, The Band Camino, the Dave Matthews Band…there’s others but those are often in the playlist.
What are a few of your favorite books? How about I say what some of the most helpful books to me have been… The Gospel According to Jesus by John MacArthur, Gospel Treason by Brad Bigney, The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer, Desiring God by John Piper, Chosen by God by R.C. Sproul, Holiness by R.C. Sproul…there are so many more!!!
Coffee or tea - and what’s your go-to order? Coffee…tea is just dirty water. Is this even a question?!?!
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you? I’m a slow reader. People think I read a lot, and I do, but I’m very slow and often distracted. And I don’t like to read, but God has revealed himself in a book and has always led his people to write books. So I think to be a faithful Christian one must be a reader whether they like it or not. How God has gifted me is to allow me remember quite well what I read. I’m grateful for that.
Faith & Ministry
What lead to you to pursue ministry? I grew up deeply involved in the church. I mean, not just going to church but really being involved in the church. Our friends were church friends, my friends were church friends. It was truly a family that loved me well, especially in the absence of my father. One of the men who loved me well was my youth pastor. It was his influence in my life that really led me to believe that ministry was a good way to leverage my life for eternity.
What part of ministry excites you the most? I’ve tried really hard to help people read and understand their Bibles on their own, which is why I created our Bible reading plan. I love hearing when people let me know that they have read their Bible all the way through for the first time. Did you know that the question Jesus asked the most in the gospels is, “Have you not read…?”
What’s one item in your office you can’t live without? My computer. So much research, writing, and communication is done digitally these days. It gets a lot of use!
What’s one prayer you have for Trinity? I have one prayer that I pray for the church as a whole, individual church members, myself, my family, etc…, I call it IOUS (which I got from John Piper, gotta give credit where credit is due). If you call Trinity home, I have prayed this for you:
Incline our hearts to you. Ps. 119:36
Open our eyes to see wonderful things in your word. Ps. 119:18
Unite our hearts to fear you name. Ps. 86:11
Satisfy us with your steadfast love. Ps. 90:14
